Pet owners reminded of animal allergy insurance need

Pet owners are urged to purchase insurance to avoid having to fork out large sums of money for allergy treatments.
Vets treatment is expensive and is rising in price. It can typically cost £1,000 to treat a dog for a broken leg for instance and Neal King, former president of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, recently stated that vets fees are rising by an annual average of 11 per cent.
Marks & Spencer Money has urged pet owners to ensure that their insurance covers allergies as well as hereditary illnesses and vets fees.
The insurer warns that although an allergy test can cost just £35, further treatments can cost anywhere between £60 and £500.
"Pets suffer from allergies the same as humans do," said Peter Longstaff, head of general insurance at Marks & Spencer Money.
"Allergies can be costly to treat and could be with your pet for life, our policy will look after your pet year after year."
Reaction to flees is the most common allergy that pets contract, followed by skin conditions and reaction to grass or pollen, according to research from Marks & Spencer Money.
