Female petrolheads benefiting from cheaper car insurance
Posted :12-05-2006
The stereotype of the timid female driver may soon have to be consigned to the history books as new research reveals that women are playing an ever increasing role in traditional Saturday afternoon male bastion motor sports. New research by Mint loans reveals that 15 per cent of women now watch the Grand Prix, while 31 per cent are keen to participate in a track day. Growth in the number of women racing and driving for pleasure is believed to have been fuelled by celebrities such as Jodie Kidd and Suzi Perry making driving fashionable. The need for speed, typically a male preserve, also appears to be crossing the gender divide, with ten per cent of respondents to the survey claiming they had made a number of 'boy racer' modifications to their car. Considerably cheaper car insurance premiums, particularly for young female drivers relative to their male counterparts, may also be playing a role in the number of women getting more forceful on the road. Car insurance providers calculate than young men are far more likely to have an accident than a young woman, although insurers may wish to recalculate based on Mint's survey results.
