Research finds women are safer drivers
Posted :19-10-2006
Women have less driving convictions than men and are safer drivers, a women's car insurance provider has claimed.
According to the research from Diamond, men are more than one and a half times as likely as women to have been convicted of a motoring offence.
It also found that men are twice as likely as women to get behind the wheel uninsured and six times more likely to be convicted of motoring offences related to drink or drugs.
Women aged between 26 and 35 were most likely to have received a motoring conviction, while the most common age group for men was 20 to 25 years old.
In addition, 11 per cent of women had been caught speeding compared to 18 per cent of men. Diamond's managing director, Sian Lewis, said that this statistic did not shock her. "Male drivers tend to be more aggressive than women and are more likely to be involved in a serious accident," she added.
According to the Association of British Insurers, those with driving convictions are likely to face higher insurance premiums and may not be entitled to full cover.
