Women drivers 'fear turning right'
Posted :28-03-2007
A number of women are scared of turning right when driving, a new study has revealed.
Research from motor insurance provider Churchill shows that the number one fear for female drivers when on the road is turning right, with 34 per cent of women confessing to bypassing roads in order to avoid making the manoeuvre.
Moreover, motorways featured as the second biggest obstacle for women drivers, with 14 per cent of UK motorists avoiding driving on one unless it is completely necessary.
In addition to this, a further 16 per cent of women refuse to drive on the continent, for fear of being unable to understand road signs, or that they could get lost.
"When motorists pass their driving tests, it doesn't necessarily qualify them as a confident driver," commented Frances Browning, spokeswoman for Churchill Car Insurance.
She added: "It may be worth undertaking a refresher course now and again to increase driver confidence and make the roads safer for everyone."
Car insurance provider American Express recently advised those travelling on the continent to take out cover.
