UK winters are awful. Once past the distraction of Christmas and New Year we face at least two months of rubbish: grey skies, damp air, mud and drizzle. Even when we get snow it soon turns to sludge and slime. If you can, the best thing to do is to go somewhere warm for the length of January and February. The news from Paris that its mayor Anne Hidalgo plans to ban all petrol-fuelled cars by 2030 cannot come as a total surprise to many observers. President Emmanuel Macron has set a 2040 target date for the sales of fossil-fuel powered vehicles to cease while Mme Hidalgo intends to ‘eradicate’ all diesel cars from the streets by 2020 in the run-up to the 2024 Summer Olympics.

On the 26th July the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) launched its Air Quality Plan which stated that from 2040 onwards new petrol and diesel cars will be banned in the United Kingdom.
